Dear Young Democrat,

Election season is upon us, so there are many great ways for you to get involved, support fellow Democrats, and have fun.  Here are several:

  • The campaign to elect Lee Fisher to the U.S. Senate needs a few volunteers to help with a fancy-pants (my description) fundraiser this Friday, September 25.  Volunteers are expected to report in the afternoon/early evening and stay through 7:15 pm or so.  If you are interested in volunteering to help with this event, please let me know ASAP.
  • Mayor Rhine McLin's re-election campaign is looking for good volunteers.  If you are interested in volunteering to help re-elect one of our great Democrats, please contact Gen Murphy at 937-222-4007.  This Saturday, September 26 and next Saturday, October 3, volunteers are needed to help the Mayor distribute yard signs and literature.  If you are able to help on either of this dates, report to Democratic Headquarters, 131 S. Wilkinson St. downtown at 9:00 am.
  • The Montgomery County Democratic Party could use a few good drivers the morning this Saturday, September 26.  Party canvassers will be sent out to key locations in Montgomery County, and you can help by driving them to their launch points.  If you are interested in helping with this critical task, please contact Gen Murphy at 937-222-4007.
  • updayton will host its first-ever candidates forum on Thursday, October 1 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at c{space, 20 N. Jefferson Street downtown.  If you want to hear candidates for Dayton Mayor and City Commission and the supporters of major ballot issues explain their ideas to make the Dayton area a great place for young people to live, work, and play, then you should attend.  The event is free and open to the public, but please RSVP to Scott Murphy at scottmurphy1@gmail.com.
  • The Montgomery County Democratic Party will hold its Get Out the Vote fundraiser on Thursday, October 15 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm at Flanagan’s Pub.  Cost is $20.
  • The Montgomery County Democratic Party also needs volunteers to distribute literature for its party walks.  The walks will take place on Saturday, October 24 and Saturday, October 31.  To help support the entire Democratic Ticket, come to Democratic Headquarters at 9:00 am on these dates.
  • The Montgomery County Board of Elections is looking for registered Democrats who are willing to work as election officials on Election Day, November 3, 2009.  If you agree to serve as an official, you will be required to attend an evening training class, to pick up supplies the weekend before Election Day, and to work from 5:45 or 6:00 am until around 8:00 pm on Election Day.  The hours are long, but the job is a noble one and you will be paid $25 for attending the training class and $110 for your work on Election Day.  Also: if you work as an election official, some employers will excuse you from work for the day, but still allow you to receive your normal pay – if that would make a difference in your willingness to serve, ask your boss about it.  If you are interested in working as an election official, please contact Robin Fecke at the Board of Elections as soon as possible.  Her number is 937-225-5673.
  • Finally, don't forget that the next happy hour for the Montgomery County Young Democrats will take place on Friday, October 9 at Jimmie's Cornerstone at 5:30 pm.  Beer will be provided for Young Democrats and fun will be provided by all, so please come.

I hope to see you at one or all of these events.  As always, feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Regards,
Nolan Thomas
